Danseuse créole was created in 1950 by Henri Matisse, as a new interpretation of the dancing theme. The painter finds its source in a form of fantasised exoticism. According to Louis Aragon, the dancing figure is inspired by the African-American choreographer Katherine Duham.
In 1945, Matisse began drawing Martinique and Malagasy models for illustrations made in the workshop of the printer-lithographer Fernand Mourlot : this lithography is one of them.
In this joyful composition the dancer rushes in a diagonal. The liveness and movement is due to the dynamic forms and geometric surfaces in vivid colours.
